Dorothy D. Lynn
1927 – 2017
Mrs. Dorothy D. Lynn passed away peacefully on June 18, 2017 at Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain, GA, where she had been a resident since 2010. A native Texan born in Fort Worth, she was the daughter of Dr. George Humphrey, a Baptist minister who later became a professor and Chair of the Department of Religion at Baylor University, and Mrs. Stella Osgood Humphrey, who was an adjunct instructor of English at Baylor.Mrs. Lynn was the widow of retired Baylor professor Dr. Ralph Lynn of Waco, TX, who predeceased her in 2009. Before marrying Dr. Lynn in 2003, she was the widow of Mr. Jack Diddie, also of Waco. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Lynn taught Spanish and English to high school students in Nashville, TN; Opelika, AL; and Waco, TX (with a brief foray into teaching third- and fourth-graders early in her career). She also offered introductory Spanish courses at Baylor University, her alma mater for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In Waco, she taught at Richfield High School, Midway High School, and Vanguard High School over a 30-year period, winning regional and state awards for her excellence in the classroom. Beloved by her students for her warmth, her generosity of spirit, and her exceptional skills as a teacher, she has left a rich legacy spanning generations.Mrs. Lynn was also an active and devoted member of Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco, where she served as a Deacon and sang in the choir. Later this summer, a memorial service will be held there to celebrate her life. An extraordinarily loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by, Patricia E. (Liza) Davis, her daughter with her first husband, Hugh Davis; by John Bugge, her son-in-law; and by her grandson, Stefan Davis Bugge.
